The flights and all of the layovers were exhausting to say the least. I think my favorite airport was the Bangkok Airport though – it has so many glass windows so you could see everything around the airport, and many shops and welcoming centers. The minute I got off the plane there was a woman in traditional Thai dress that gave me a bag of local fruit as a welcoming gift. The people around the airport, and everyone else that I have met in Thailand so far, have been so kind and are so willing to help ‘farangs’ (the Thai word for foreigners). Going from the Chiang Mai Airport to the guesthouse I stayed in last night was an adventure. The motor bikes, tuk tuks, and other taxis drive wherever they really want, and as quickly as they want. I am glad I will mostly be transporting myself around by bicycle, because the roads are crazy.
I met up with a few of the people in my company for dinner and drinks last night. The wonderful Thai meal that I had only cost 80 Baht – which is about $2.50. There was so much food too. Four of us shared a number of different plates, and there were so many leftovers. Many of the restaurants and bars are just open to the street, so there are no real doors or anything. It was so much fun just to walk in and out of all the different areas. We spent most of our time at a Reggae bar with a few pool tables, that the guys from my office like to play I guess. I only had one drink (which cost the same amount as my meal and was definitely not as good!) and then went to bed at 9pm Chiang Mai time.
Today, I am going to move into my apartment and then go to the office for the afternoon. Tomorrow I am supposed to be helping lead a trip up to the mountains with a group of school kids from Dubai. Hopefully sometime this weekend I will get pictures up and be a little more settled in!
